TUT minor: Materials and the Environment (25 ECTS)
Spring 2011 - Spring 2012
Tampere University of Technology, Department of Materials Science provides a minor (25 cr) entitled Materials and the Environment.
The aim of these courses is to approach our urban environment from the perspective of materials science. What kind of materials we use, where and why? How are the materials recycled or reused? What are the environmental effects of the materials and how can they be measured and managed?
Spring 2011
Materials and their applications in the urban environment I, 5 cr
In this course students will learn the basics of polymeric materials; plastics, composites, fibres,
textiles, wood, WPCs, biomaterials and "new materials".
The course deals with questions like: What are plastics, where do we use them and why? How
about the other polymeric materials? What are materials from renewable resources or
biodegradable materials? What kind of new materials we’ll be using in the future?
The students will understand the key issues of structure, properties, modification and testing of
polymeric materials, considerations in selection of materials to their main applications and materials
in different operating conditions.
