WHAT IS LAHTI UNIVERSITY CONSORTIUM?
During the period between 2001 and 2003, the Ministry of Education worked together with Finnish universities to establish six university consortiums in Finland alongside the already existing 20 universities. The university consortiums were established in regions in which there already is some notable university activity and representation. For instance, the University of Helsinki has organised activities in the Lahti region over 30 years already.
Today, the Lahti University Consortium employs over 200 people and has 5000 students. The Lahti University Consortium has 12 professorships, a secretary general and a coordination unit. The Lahti Science Library functions as the scientific library of the Lahti University Consortium.
The main task of the Lahti University Consortium is to raise the level of education and know-how and to serve the trade and industry in the Lahti region, as well as the region itself, through university research, development and education. In this way, the Lahti University Consortium advances the welfare of the Lahti Region.
The Lahti University Consortium has profiled itself into the disciplines of the environmental, technical and economic sciences as well as into the disciplines of the social and pedagogical sciences. It is the mission of the Lahti University Consortium to develop and implement partnership practices that generate multidisciplinary and distinct research of international standards as well as educational and development activities in the chosen scientific areas of emphasis.
In addition to their versatile research activities, the units of the Lahti University Consortium offer university-level education both as in the form of under- and post-graduate studies, in addition to which the centre offers professional development training programmes and open university studies of different durations. The selection of educational activities also includes studies tailored particularly to companies as well as to the public sector.
